ARTLAB SOFT

august 17 - september 15

In the weekend of 10 and 11 August, iCOON will start setting up art lab SOFT. For five weekends, three artists and two designers will investigate on site how they can soften the acoustics of iCOON’s concrete bunker.

Artists & Designers

The design duo and the three artists are: The New Raw, Ivo Schouten, Tineke Bruijnzeels and AKMAR.
Every weekend, one or more of them will be present to test the impact on iCOON with their favorite material.

Experimental

This is the first time iCOON transforms into an art lab. Construction and installation will take place, with materials such as wood, felt, paper, plastic waste and water. Sawing will take place, there will be tests hanging, there will be example objects and artist AKMAR came up with a different way to experience the bunker.

Final day is Sunday September 15th. art lab SOFT.  Everyone will be present to show their results. The best proposal is expected to be implemented.

No standard exhibition for visitors. View, wonder, be part of or judge the experiment.
The ticket price for this art lab has been reduced from 10 euros to 7.50 euros.

Tineke Bruijnzeels' work ranges from minimalist drawings to layered paintings and installations. It often arises from repeating an action and stems from curiosity. What happens when you repeat a simple action. Not three times, but dozens or hundreds of times.
She lets 1001 ping-pong balls float, glues 44,000 rubber bands together. Apply many layers of varnish, sometimes 347, sometimes 30. Hangs up thousands of strips of paper to create a silent space. Every action, even a tiny one, is part of the final work. Just as every second is an essential part of a day, a year, a century. Just as every breath is part of a life.
Time is an essential part of her work, the realization of which sometimes takes a day, but often months and sometimes years.

omnia mutantur, nihil interit
'Everything changes, nothing perishes'.
Ovidius

Her work is multidisciplinary from video (computer generated) to physical sculpture. Common ground is the question ; What is reality?
It questions the figurative world, which we experience as truth.
By adding time, this concept always gets a different outcome.
The answer is diffuse and lies hidden in different materials and methods.

Ivo Schouten's works move between 2D and 3D, are characterized by clear compositions and often have a modular character. Partly due to an interest in architecture and structures, spatial works or references to spatiality often arise.

They are based on a clear idea of form and color and thus frame Ivo's views, without it becoming dogmatic. In contrast to the rigid forms, there is a careful manual making process that shows itself in its subtlety. The different layers in the work – sleek, angular, open and flexible – give freedom to the viewer and form an impetus to broaden the view.

The New Raw crafts plastic waste with robots.
The New Raw is a research and design studio based in
Rotterdam (Netherlands) founded in 2015 by architects Panos Sakkas and Foteini Setaki with the ambition to give new life to discarded materials through design, robots and craftsmanship.
The New Raw develops its own (digital) craftsmanship techniques through a formal and technical language that highlights the texture and the layer-by-layer character of its in-house robotic manufacturing process. The exploration of the possibilities that the robotic techniques provide transform plastic waste into beautiful and meaningful products that are 100% circular.
